Calling for an immediate ceasefire during pandemic

Writer's picture: WJOWJO

As member of شبکه زنان افغان - د افغان ښځو شبکه - Afghan Women's Network and Coalition of “Our Voice for Our Future” in Afghanistan, we accede to this call to Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Queen of Qatar for immediate ceasefire during COVID period.

Today, as the world is grappling with the unforeseen consequences of the COVID -19 pandemic, Afghans are facing two lethal enemies: COVID-19 and the ongoing war. United Nations in Afghanistan reported this week that in only the first three months of this year, 500 Afghans lost their lives in this conflict – 150 of them were innocent children. All of this happens despite the recent “peace” deal signed between the United States and the Taliban. At meanwhile, we strongly appreciate the on-going efforts of Qatari government for supporting the Afghan peace process.

We applaud your statement joining the UN Secretary-General and other global leaders in the “Rise for All” campaign, which called for urgent action in response to COVID-19 to save lives around the world. Nothing would save more lives in Afghanistan now than heeding the call for ceasefire, urged by the Organization of Islamic Conferences (OIC), the UN Secretary-General, and the European Union.

We are writing this letter in the hope that your Highness will join the world and us – the mothers, sisters, and daughters in Afghanistan in pressing for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.
